A small tribute to the person who matters the most in my Life...

"Damm, I am getting late for college, Where is my breakfast?" "What’s for dinner today? I am tired of eating the same foodeveryday!!!" "I have a function in school today. Have my favorite pair of jeansand my blue t shirt been washed and pressed?" "I have to stay awake the whole night today to prepare for mytough papers tomorrow. Who is going to make tea for me when I feel sleepy atnight?" "I have to wake up at 4 'o clock in the morning tomorrow. Who willensure I don’t miss it?" “I want to do this but Dad won’t let me do it. Can anybody convince himthat this is the best thing  for me to do?” These are just few of the numerous questions being asked everyday by all members of my family – some gently and politely and some out of frustration and with aggression. And we know if there is a person in the family who has the answers to all these questions, its none other than my Mom.  Since the time I can remember of my existence, I have seen my mom doing so much for all of us that, sometimes I wonder if Ican ever do even 1% of it for her before the end of this life. Starting from the beginning of the day till the time we went to bed at night, I can’t remember of even a single thing that could have been done at home without her involvement, especially because most of the time may dad was away from home for his job and it’s my mom who was the soul and brain of our family. My mom, Smt Niyati Padhy, is the 4th child of her parents and she has 3 sisters below her. Being born and bought up in a small place in the rich traditional state of Orissa, my mom is the perfect example of a true Oriya woman with Indian culture running in her blood throughout her body. But she is so different from a lot of people of her generation and her surroundings.With a broad mind and thoughts of high standards, she is just a kind of God, a role model for all of us. Always being able to adapt to situation and ready to accept things is something I have learned the best from her. By profession, my mom is a retired school Headmistress. I can still remember the days when I was a kid of 2 years and she used to leave me at my maternal aunt’s(Momi Nani) place or at home with my uncle(Kama Kaka) or with my paternal aunt’(Lata Nani) place and go to attend her B.Ed classes. My mornings were the most horrible times of the day, when I used to see her off for the day and the thoughts of me being alone without her throughout the day used to haunt me very badly. She started her teaching career as a teacher in K.C Public School in Berhampur when I was a KG student in the same school. I know about how much KG kids hate to go to school in my part of the world, The fact that they have to be in school for 6 to 8 hours outside of home without parents forces them to hate school. I was one of the few lucky kids who would be with his mom even at school. She didn’t take any of my classes then for the first couple of years,but whenever I found some free time, I would go about searching for her in all the classes going on at school. I would calmly watch her teaching her students,from outside of her class hiding in a corner. Sometimes, I would also go straight into the staff’s room to meet her when she would be checking her student’s assignments or evaluating examination papers. “How often did I tell you not to enter the staff’s room? Why are you trying to get me into trouble?” She would yell at me. Then when I would start weeping, she would take me to the kids play area and spend some time with me at the sliding chutes and merry go round rides corner. She next joined Maharishi Vidya Mandir in Berhampur as the first Principal of the newly opened school in our city. After spending 5 years at KC Public School, I too moved to Maharishi Vidya Mandir where I studied for a year. Its at this place where I became the official student of my Mom for the first time.She used to teach me Geography at school and so I can say: “She is the one who showed me the world as a mother and also as a geography teacher.” When Sona(my brother) was born, it became a little bit difficult for her to take care of we three kids. Then my Dad too moved to Boudh which is far from Berhampur. So the responsibility of the whole house was solely on her and due to this, she had to quit her job and just be the manager of our family. Days passed and in this phase of my life I used to see her perform her duties as a perfect house wife and a perfect mother. Throughout the day she would be engaged in taking care of Sona along with me and my sister. Additional responsibilities of my cousin (Mili Nani) who used to stay with us was also on her. She carried out her duties perfectly and wonderfully managed the house both as a house wife and as the owner of the house. After Sona was admitted in school and all three of us were grown up enough to take good care of ourselves, she got an offer to join Helen Keller Red Cross school for the Deaf and Dumb as the head mistress. People who don’t have any experience of dealing with physically disabled children, let me tell You,Its the toughest job on earth to teach, manage and help these unlucky children.And I can proudly say that My Mom championed this art and came out with flying colors.The rare blend of professionalism and compassion that my Mom is gifted with actually helped her do the job so neatly. Its under her leadership that the school excelled and grew from strength to strength –be it them having their own big building or be it the ratio of deaf and dumb students graduating out of high school. Frankly speaking, its only this phase that I could realize how much my Mom was special. She would wake up very early in the morning, finish her daily activities, finish the big traditional worship procedure, cook breakfast and lunch for all of us and then leave for school at 8 am in the morning. She would return from her school in the evening and then again would start with cleaning the house and cooking dinner. Her stamina to work continuously and tirelessly throughout the day would amaze anybody who knew her. This phase of her life spanned for about 10 years. In between, I remember,she had to undergo a training on teaching deaf and dumb students in Bhubaneswar for 1 year. She would visit us every weekend during this period. OMG.. Her tenure with HKRC school for the deaf was LONG!!! Its during this period that, I grew up to be a boy from a kid, I learned driving, Graduated from High School to enter my Intermediate, completed my engineering and joined my first job with IBM. Days passed, I moved to Kolkata, then to Bangalore, and then to Atlanta and now in Arkansas. I have grown up. I am so far from her but she is always with me, every moment. She is my biggest strength in any circumstances in my life. She is the one whom I can count on when I am low. She is the one with whom, I would like to share all my happy and sorrow moments first. She is definitely the one who would be my strength and force to take any decision, take any challenge or take on any opposition in life. And she is the one who can moisten these eyes which normally always remain dry even during the worst times of life (exception: when I am totally drunk). I can realize how much I love her as I am writing this blog. Jesus!!!  Sometimes tears flow for no reason and sometimes they fail to appear when You want them to pour down!!! There are few people who can and who do explicitly express their love and affection for people and I am definitely NOT one of them. There are plenty of people around who need love and care to be explicitly expressed to them and my Mom is NOT one of them. Bapa(My mom as I call her), I could not find any precious thing on this earth that I can give You in return of what You have done for me. The best I can give at this moment is simply something which comes straight from the deepest core of my heart “I LOVE YOU….Thanks for being there!”

Rahul Dravid - 15 unforgettable moments in 15 glorious years at the helm...

Indians by nature are worshippers and followers. Another trait of we Indians is that we generally go by hype and stardom and miss out on actual substance and class. How many FB posts/tweets/articles did we see when Rahul Dravid reached 12k Test runs(only 3rd person in history), how much hyped it was when he took a record 200 catches? How well was it visible when he played his 150th test? Now how much credit are we giving him on his completing 15 glorious years serving the country? Think the same things being achieved by a bigger star and we would have been celebrating on the roads and showing off our happiness. Lucky or Unlucky but thats the way it is…. It is already 15 years since a simple, elegant, studious and very likeable young man walked out to bat for India at Lord's. That was an appropriate setting. Rahul Dravid is neatly turned out, plays the game correctly, likes the traditions associated with the game and is respectful of them. It is not difficult to see why the English would like him. In 1996, though, he was significantly more humble and courteous than those I seemed to run into at the ground. Not much has changed since then. He is still as intense as ever, still unlikely to sport the ponytail he rejected in one of his earliest commercials, still deeply enamoured by the idea of playing for India, still very out of place in the Kingfisher jingle. That intensity is worth studying, though, for Dravid knows no other way of playing the game. Like a good student would, he assimilates data, works out what he is going to do, and focuses as intently as anyone who has played the game. Patience has been a childhood friend, and it has allowed him to retain the intensity. Impatience is the hallmark of youth, and while Dravid has been young in years, he has always sported a maturity that belies them. Being a true fan of cricket(not materialistic events like IPL and all), I thought its a sort of my duty to do my bit on this occasion. Here I have compiled the 15 unforgettable highlights in the glorious career of the most underrated and over performing cricketer of India. Rahul Dravid, a classical test batsman, made his Test debut on Jun 20-24, 1996 at Lords against England, scoring 95 runs from 267 deliveries, spending 363 minutes, finding boundary only 6 times. His introduction to the playing 11 is as much interesting as his long career.Actually Dravid like Sourav Ganguly was taken on that tour of England in 1996 as an extra batsman purely on his impressive domestic record. At the start of the tour it seemed unlikely that both would even make the playing eleven. The Indian batting had a settled look and the first six in the batting order were Navjot Sidhu, Vikram Rathore, Sanjay Manjrekar, Sachin Tendulkar, Md Azharuddin and Ajay Jadeja. The withdrawal of Sidhu who left the team midway through the one day series just before the Tests started, following a misunderstanding with skipper Azharuddin changed the equations somewhat and then an injury to Manjrekar before the second Test meant that there were two places vacant. Wicket keeper Nayan Mongia was pushed up the order to open with Rathore and both Ganguly and Dravid made their way to the squad. And the rest as the cliche goes is history. Interestingly enough Dravid came in at No 7 at Lord’s and not surprisingly in a mini crisis. India were 202 for five in reply to England’s 344 and after him there were just the four bowlers. Dravid saw Ganguly reach his hundred, figured in a 94-run sixth wicket stand that steered India to safety and then batted with the tail in such exemplary fashion that India were able to total 429. He was not destined to emulate Ganguly for he was out for 95. Two weeks later at Trent Bridge again batting at No 7 Dravid got 84 and it was by now obvious that a long term solution to India’s batting problems had been uncovered. He scored his maiden century with 148 in first and 81 in the second innings of the testmatch, against South Africa at Johennasburg. It earned him his first man of the match award. He has played 151 test matches till now. He has 31 centuries and 59 half centuries. He holds the record of scoring centuries against all test playing nations, become the first player to achieve this. At Rawalpindi, Dravid stroked a masterly 270, his highest test score, to take India to a historic test series win over Pakistan. He scored four consecutive centuries (115, 148, 217 & 100* ) against England and West Indies during 2002, becoming one among three to do this. Uniquely, each of his five double centuries in Tests was a higher score than his previous double century (200*, 217, 222, 233, 270). Dravid has faced highest number of deliveries in test cricket, more than Allan Border’s previous record of 27002 deliveries. He is nicknamed “THE WALL”. Following on at Kolkata against Australia in 2001, Dravid and Laxman put on 376 runs for the fifth wicket in the second innings of the match. Dravid scored 180 while Laxman made 281 in Indias remarkable test victory. It remains one of his greatest performances till date. Again at Adelaide against Australia this pair put 303 runs, when in the first innings, India were looking down the barrel at 4 wickets down for 85 runs in reply to Australia’s massive 556. Laxman was dismissed for 148 while Dravid went on make 233. Also his 87 runs against South Africa at Port Elizebath 87(241), 312 minutes. Rahul Dravid is the third batsman in the world after compatriot Sachin Tendulkar and Australia’s Ricky Ponting to reach the 12000-run milestone in test cricket. At Rawalpindi, Dravid stroked a masterly 270, his highest test score, to take India to a historic test series win over Pakistan. Later that year in Port Elizabeth against South Africa, he made a crucial match-saving 87 runs in the second innings to deny South Africa the win. His ODI career began on Apr 3rd, 1996, against Sri Lanka at Singapore, where he scored only 3 runs. But till now, he has played 339 ODIs, scored 12 centuries and 82 half centuries, with a highest score of 153 against NZ. His first ODI century came 107(116) against Pakistan at Chennai on May 21st. 1997. Though he is a known as a reputed Test batsman, he scored more than 10,000 runs in ODI cricket, with a decent strike rate of 71.17. (6th player and 3rd Indian to score more than 10,000 runs in ODIs) Dravid has scored 50 not out in 22 balls(Strike Rate-227.27)vs NewZealand in Hyderabad on 15 Nov,2003,second fastest 50 among Indians. Another interesting fact is that he is the only player to be involved in 2 partnerships of 300+ in ODIs. During the 1999 World Cup Sourav Ganguly (183) and Rahul Dravid (145) put 318 run stand for India v Sri Lanka in Taunton. The other higher stand in ODIs – 331 – involved Dravid andSachin Tendulkar in Hyderabad later in 1999 against New Zealand. He is one of the few Indians who average more at away Test matches than athome, averaging about 5 more runs a match abroad than on Indian pitches. Dravid’s average in overseas Tests stood at 55.53 as against his home Test average of 50.76. In matches that India has won, Dravid averages 66.34 in Test and 50.69 in ODI. He has taken 200 catches in tests and 196 catches in ODIs He was named one of the Wisden cricketers of the year 2000. In 2004, Dravid was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India. During the same year, he was awarded the inaugural Player of the year award and the Test player of the year by the ICC . Unfortunately, this Gentleman Cricketer in January 2004 was found guilty of ball tampering during an ODI with Zimbabwe. Match referee Clive Lloyd adjudged the application of an energy sweet to the ball as a deliberate offence although Dravid himself denied this was his intent. Indian coach John Wright came out in defence of Dravid, stating that “It was an innocent mistake”. Wright argued that Dravid had been trying to apply saliva to the ball when parts of a losenge he had been chewing stuck to the ball; Dravid then tried to wipe it off. ICC regulations prevented Dravid from commenting about the issue, but former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly also stated that Dravid’s act was “just anaccident”.
